Cellulite Q & A

What is cellulite?

Cellulite is the name given to areas of skin and flesh that’s lumpy and dimpled, like the rind of an orange. Cellulite can appear on any part of your body, but it’s typically found on your:

  • Thighs
  • Hips
  • Buttocks
  • Abdomen

Cellulite isn’t a medical problem and won’t cause you harm, but you may find it unsightly and wish to reduce the appearance of your cellulite.

Why do I have cellulite?

The typically dimpled appearance of skin affected by cellulite is caused by fat cells accumulating under your skin and putting pressure on the connective tissues that hold the skin to the muscles. It isn’t entirely clear why some people develop cellulite and others don’t.

There are risk factors that make you more likely to develop cellulite, including:

  • Being female (men do get cellulite, but not as often as women)
  • The aging process
  • Weight gain
  • Inactivity
  • Pregnancy

Genetics plays a key part in whether you’re likely to develop cellulite, so if other members of your family have it, you’re at a higher risk of developing cellulite too.

What treatments are available to reduce cellulite?

No treatment can completely clear cellulite, but there are some effective ways to reduce the amount of cellulite you have. If you’re overweight, losing weight by following a healthy diet and exercise plan can help. Also, the application of retinol cream is effective in reducing cellulite if used regularly for at least six months.

There are also some innovative technologies available for reducing cellulite, such as:

  • Radiofrequency therapy
  • Infrared light therapy
  • Laser therapy
  • Laser-assisted liposuction
  • Cryolipolysis (fat freezing)
  • Ultrasound therapy

At Green Valley Primary Care, the team uses the TempSure Envi aesthetics platform to treat cellulite. TempSure Envi uses radiofrequency waves to heat the skin and underlying tissues, tightening the skin and stimulating the production of new collagen fibers. As the new collagen forms, the dimpling of the cellulite evens out.

If you have areas of cellulite that you’d like to get rid of, call Green Valley Primary Care today to find out how they can help, or book an appointment online.
